GANDHINAGAR, FEB 21

At least six Congress workers, including women, were injured on Monday when police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the party demonstrators protesting against the decision to lift ban on Government employees taking part in RSS activities.

Congress members, who staged a demonstration in front of Gujarat Legislative Assembly, shouted slogans demanding withdrawal of the Government circular and pelted stones, smashing the glass panes of the Assembly building, police said. The demonstrators were led by state party president C D Patel and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Amarsinh Chaudhary.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Governor Sundar Singh Bhandari8217;s address on the opening day of the budget session of the State Legislative Assembly on Monday was disrupted when Congress members shouted slogans, demanding continuation of the ban on Government employees taking part in RSS activities. The Governor completed his address within ten minutes and only read the beginning and the concluding part of his speech which, however, could not be heard in the din prevailing in the House.

The Congress MLAs also displayed banners inside the Assembly and shouted slogans against the RSS and BJP and demanded immediate withdrawal of the circular, lifting ban on the RSS, issued by the Government in January. Accompanied by speaker Dhirubhai Shah, the Governor left the House immediately after completing his address.
