
CHENNAI, OCT 18: The CPIM has written to the Chief Election Commissioner and Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu, stating that Union Minister of State for Petroleum E Ponnusamy had breached the election rules by casting his vote in Chidambram Lok Sabha constituency even as he was registered as a voter in Madras North, in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
In a statement here, the CPIM Tamil Nadu state committee demanded immediate action against Ponnusamy, charging him with violating the constitution as well as the election rules.
Ponnusamy had won from Chidambaram Reserve as a candidate of the Pattali Makkal Katchi PMK.
Yesterday, the TMC too had demanded the resignation of Ponnusamy from the cabinet. TMC Political Affairs Committee PAC members S G Vinayagamurthy and Sudarshanam MLA had urged the Election Commission to hold an enquiry into how Ponnusamy was allowed to vote in Chidambaram constituency.

He told PTI that he had produced a certificate from the Revenue Divisional Officer, Ponnery, a northern suburb of Chennai, that he was a voter in Villivakkam assembly segment in the city and had asked the presiding officer at the Virudachalam booth whether he could vote. After taking the certificate from him, the officer had allowed him to vote, Poonusamy said adding that he was not at fault. Ponnusamy said he had also consulted legal experts, who opined that he had not committed any mistake.
