
TORONTO, Feb 5: Indian actor Roshan Seth, who first shot to fame enacting Jawaharlal Nehru in Sir Richard Attenborough8217;s Gandhi, has been declared the best actor in the Canadian film industry8217;s Genie Awards for his performance in the movie Such A Long Journey.
Seth played the lead role in the film based on Rohinton Mistry8217;s novel of the same name and co-starring Naseeruddin Shah. Francois Girard8217;s historical epic The Red Violin swept the awards declared yesterday, winning in seven categories including best picture.
The film, which stars Samuel L Jackson and Greta Scacchi and tells the story of a violin that passes from owner to owner over four centuries, also earned Girard the award for best director.
In its equivalent of the Oscars ceremony, the Academy of Canadian Cinema gave Sandra Oh the award for best actress for her performance in Last Night.
In addition to the award for best direction, Girard shared the award for screenplay with The Red Violin co-writer Don Mckellar. The 14-million-Canadian-dollar film was also honoured for cinematography, sound, score and art direction.
McKellar also wrote and directed Last Night and won the Academy8217;s special award for directing a first feature film. The movie is about a group of people living their last night before the world is destroyed.
