Things took an ugly turn at the auditions of the MTV8217;s adventure reality show Roadies as thousands of youngsters lined up at the gates of the NCUI Auditorium on Friday morning, when a violent mob vandalised the venue, breaking the glass of the main entrance door, burning pamphlets, breaking chairs and tables and throwing bottles of water all over the place.
8220;This is the sixth season of the show and it is the first time something like this has happened. We still don8217;t know what exactly triggered it off. Certain rowdy elements took upon themselves to ruin the fun everyone had come for,8221; said Vaibhav Vishal, associate VP for content, MTV.
The auditions were scheduled to begin at 9 am and were delayed by an hour. It was after four group discussions that the crowd turned violent, around 11.30am. 8220;We had conducted about four group discussions, each having 20 people, when suddenly a large group of boys started creating a ruckus and forced the gates open,8221; said Vishal.
The auditions, which were spread over three days from October 3 to 5, were finally cancelled till the management finds itself a new venue and zeroes in on another date schedule 8212; information on which might be found on the MTV website or the channel.
The sixth season of Roadies plans to take 20 contestants to Australia to fight for a prize money of Rs 10 lakh. While a total of 7,000 people had turned up for auditions in Delhi last year, this year the number seemed to have gone up to anywhere between 8000 and 9000.
8220;The show has a cult following and we are already through with conducting auditions in four cities. Everything has gone smoothly so far. It8217;s unfortunate that something like this would happen in Delhi because it is one of our favourite cities and we get some of the best contestants from this city,8221; added Vishal.
A senior Delhi Police official said the police were not 8220;informed about such a huge turnout8221;.
