MUMBAI, OCT 2: Rizvi College defeated defending champions Siddharth 3-1 to enter the final of the inter-college football tournament at the University Sports Pavilion here today. Rizvi had their three professional league players, Khalid Jamil, Melwyn Vaz both Air-India and Inchen Lanuchuba Central Railway to thank for each of the three goals.
In the second semi-final, Khalsa capitalised on a silly defence lapse to beat Mithibai 1-0. Despite trailing for a large part of the match, Mithibai dominated proceedings, thrice hitting the cross bar, but were woefully off target.
At halftime in the first match, Rizvi were 0-1 down after Siddharth scored in the 8th minute, a goal which Rizvi coach Ajud Banerjee described as a defence lapse. Rizvi had to wait ten more minutes before the Air-India boys combined to restore parity. After Khalid slotted home a Melwyn cross, it was Inchen8217;s turn to get into the act, again off a Melwyn cross. But the two goals, however neatly worked, paled in the audacity of the third:Khalid8217;s 40-yarder was too good for the Siddharth custodian.
Despite the good work, Khalid was a bit worried. Bimal Ghosh, the Air-India coach, is not too happy about the international playing for the college between super league matches. 8220;He also teases me, How come you score there and not here?8221; Khalid adds. Though he will play the final two days later, Khalid says he will not be available for the inter-varsity tournament.
In the second match, Khalsa went into the lead in the 10th minute after Mithibai defender Godfrey Almeida committed a clearance error. He headed the ball back softly to keeper Kiran Shetty, taking him by surprise. Kiran fumbled, and Anthony Verghese gleefully put it in.
