England and Portugal have played three times in international competitions. One match stands out because it’s an all-time classic
WORLD CUP 1966
Semi-final, Wembley Stadium
Score: England 2, Portugal 1
Portugal’s first Golden Age, when Eusebio terrorised the world. The Black Pearl had already taken his team to an amazing quarter-final win over North Korea — scoring four goals — and was looking to complete the job. But England had home support and the two Bobbys, Moore and Charlton, to see them through. Eusebio, who scored nine goals in the tournament including a late penalty against England, was inconsolable at the end. Black and white images of him wiping away tears with his sweat-soaked shirt remain one of the classic World Cup moments. Two years later, Charlton and Eusebio would meet again, at Wembley, playing for their respective club sides. Again, the Portuguese would lose, Man U beating Benfica to lift the European Cup.
