NEW DELHI, July 31: The Delhi High Court today directed the Delhi University not to publish any list of admissions to the Law Faculty till August 3 and issued notices to the Vice-Chancellor, Dean, Faculty of Law and Convenor admissions, among others on a petition seeking admission of candidates as per merit.
Justice Cyriac Joseph issued the notices on a petition by Motika Sinha and seven other candidates. Counsels for petitioners Dr Surat Singh and Sunil Kumar contended that Motika Sinha and seven other candidates appeared in the LL.B. Entrance test held by the Faculty of Law 1998 and secured a place in the first merit list. 8220;But because of technical reasons, the Faculty of Law was not admitting them to the first-year course. Instead persons of lower ranks are being admitted by the faculty for reasons best known to them,8221; Dr Singh submitted in the petition.
He further pleaded that only half a day was given to the candidates shown in the first merit list to deposit their forms and requisite documents whereas for candidates on the second merit list more than two working days were given. 8220;The respondents in an illegal and arbitrary manner allowed the petitioners only half a working day to fulfill all the formalities and to submit their forms,8221; the petitioners contended.
Counsel Dr Singh further contended that 8220;such actions on the part of the respondents are guided by the sole motive of admitting students who find favour with the respondents,8221; and 8220;that such action on the part of the respondents are illegal, arbitrary, unreasonable, unjustified and done with malafide intention and hence deserve to be quashed.8221;
Justice Joseph issued show-cause notices to the respondents as to why the not petition be admitted. The notices are returnable on August 3. Counsel for the university Mariaputham received the notice on behalf of the University.
