BHUBANESWAR, JUNE 22: Dipu Das, an associate of Dara Singh, the key accused in the triple murder of Australian missionary Graham Stewart Staines and his two sons in Manoharpur village on January 22, told the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI that religious conversion was the reason behind the killing.
Das, a native of Maliposi village under Patna Police Station of Keonjhar district, was involved in several dacoity and rioting cases in Satkosia and Thakurmunda areas. He was arrested from a garage in a late night raid on June 7. Later, he was handed over to the CBI team camping in Anandpur.
During interrogation, Das confessed that the conspiracy to kill Staines was discussed in the house of one Makar Dhwaja Mahanta in Purunaposi village under Thakurmunda police station of Mayurbhanj district.
Mahanta, also wanted by the CBI in connection with the case, is still absconding.
Das said nearly 40 people attended the meeting where the conspiracy was discussed, while 46 people gathered in Manoharpur village where the Staines were killed. Those who gathered at Manoharpur sported red bands around their heads, Das added.
He also admitted that Dara Singh hid in his house till February 5.
Sources said Das was part of the 85-member group led by Dara that set a truck carrying cattle ablaze. Members wore red bands on that occasion as well, they added.
