Roopnagar: CPI M veteran Khushwant Rai Joshi has accused the BJP government of playing a communal card by announcing a grant of Rs 100 crore for the tercentenary celebrations of the Khalsa Panth. Speaking to ENS, Joshi said that the grant amounted to violation of model code of conduct in view of the assembly elections in Delhi and Rajasthan, where Sikhs are in a sizable number. He added that the abrupt decision of the Akalis not to field their nominees in these states cannot be a co-incidence and this be construed as a quot;political briberyquot;.
Food poisoning
Roopnagar: Nine persons, including two superintendents and one inspector posted at the Central Excise range office here were taken ill and complained of giddiness and vomiting. According to sources, the staffers at the excise range office were rushed to the civil hospital after they had their morning tea. Though the exact cause of suspected food poisoning is not yet known, the condition of all the patients is stated to be normal.
Co-operative weekAmritsar: The state-level cooperative week will be inaugurated here on November 14. Disclosing this, Deputy Commissioner Narinderjit Singh stated that Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, Cooperative Minister and K S Janjua, Financial Commissioner, Punjab, would attend the function.
Students8217; dharna
Patiala: A large number of students today sat in dharna here in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner regarding their pending demands. The protest dharna was organised on the call of Punjab Students Union under the the state-wise programme of organising such dharna at the district level. Addressing the dharna, state president of the Union, Sukhwinder Singh Puppy appealed to the Centre and the state government to allot 10 per cent of the total budget for education.
Chetna rally
Patiala: The Bahujan Samaj Morcha is organising a bahujan chetna rally here on November 14 at Rajpura colony grounds. This was stated here today by the district convenor of the morcha, Paramjit Singh Kainth. Kainth said that the national convenor of the morcha, Satnam Singh Kainth, Member Parliament, would address the district-level rally.

Abohar: Two persons were killed while their driver and another person were injured near village Sitogunno of this sub-division. Sant Swaroop 66 of Akhara Buta, Amritsar, along with six others were on their way to village Bishanpura. While crossing village Sitogunno, two occupants of a car chasing them started firing. While Sant Swaroop was killed in the Gypsy, driver Veram Singh and Sukhdev Das ran away to the fields, where Sukhdev Das was killed. The driver and Mahant Harvinder Dass was injured, but Goverdhan Dass. Bharti Dass and Mohan Dass escaped in the fields. The police are clueless about those involved in the killing.
Ludhiana: The police have arrested Sarabjit Singh alias Sarbi, who was allegedly involved in various vehicle thefts in the city. According to SSP Dinkar Gupta, a police party headed by sub inspector Joginder Sngh, SHO Salem Tabri had nabbed the accused from near Amaltas motel during nakabandi while he was driving a Maruti car Pb-10-D 0572 which was reported as stolen yesterday by Pritpal Singh from outside a clinic near Shivpuri road. During preliminary interrogation, the accused had confessed to thefts of two more Maruti cars and two Yamaha motor cycles.
Sundernagar: Prem Lal, accused of raping his two minor daughters, was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate here on Thursday, who remanded him to judicial custody for two weeks.

Patiala: A dental rally was organised here under the dental health fortnight programme in which children of local schools took part. It was flagged off by a senior teacher of the participating schools. School children were given dental health awareness talks regarding daily use of toothbrushes, healthy food habits, and common teeth diseases Jasleen Kaur, Chief Medical Officer dental of school health team, Patiala.
Conference on surgery from Nov 20
Ludhiana: The department of surgery, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital will be holding the 19th annual conference of northern chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India from November 20 to 22. About 20 guest speakers from all over India will deliver lectures and 500 delegates from all over northern India will attend the conference.
