
Heat-stroke
Patiala: Two heat-stroke deaths were reported from different parts of the city yesterday taking the toll in the current heat-wave to four. Head constable in the Indian Reserve Batallion Mohan Singh was found dead in the Tripri township area while Jeet Singh, a resident of Upli village was found dead from near the bus stand.
Entrance test
Patiala: The entrance test for admission to the MA and MSc classes and honour school courses at Punjabi University campus would be held on July 1. Twenty centres have been created for this purpose. The roll numbers of all eligible candidates have been dispatched and if any candidate fails to get the same by June 27, he should come personally along with an attested copy of a photograph to the office of the coordinator to collect the duplicate copy of the roll number slip. Those who have opted for Faridkot and Bathinda centres will appear at Bathinda and all others will appear at Patiala only, a university press release here today said.

Chandigarh: Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Charanjit Sinmgh Atwal today banned mobile phones in the House. He gave the ruling when the issue was raised by Luxmi Kanta Chawla BJP and some other members.
Anti-flood measures
Sangrur: Deputy Commissioner Anirudh Tiwari said here yesterday that he has directed the concerned officials in the district to ensure flood protection works by the end of the month and also directed officials not to leave their respective headquarters without his prior permission. Presiding over a meeting convened here yesterday to review the flood preparedness in the district, Tiwari directed that all drains should be cleaned, canals and distributaries be de-silted and embankments be strengthened.

Sangrur: Punjab State Ministerial Services Union expressed great resentment during their on-going protest rallies against down-grading of their pay scales. Addressing the rally in front of the PWD office here yesterday, union chief Raj Kumar Arora expressed grave concern over the decline in grade of pay scales of junior assistant from Rs 5000 to Rs 4400 and of 30 percent senior clerks from Rs 4020 to Rs 3120 besides 80 per cent steno-typists from Rs 4020 to Rs 3300, and the junior scale steno-graphers from Rs 5000 to Rs 4400. Arora said that the union would observe black fortnight from July 1 to July 15 by wearing black badges and observe pen-down strike on July 14 and July 15.

Ludhiana: Gurudwara Elections Commission has issued a notification for elections to 29 Gurudwara Parbandhak Committees GPC8217;s In the district. Stating this in a meeting of returning officers, Deputy Commissioner Arun Goel said that nomination papers would be filed from June 24 to July 8, scrutiny would be done on July 11, withdrawls would be allowed till July 20 and voting would take place on August 9. The results of Gurudwara elections would be declared on August 11.

Shimla: The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress has warned the Chinese government to learn a lesson from Gilles Blanchard8217;s sacrifice and come to the negotiating table with their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, without any pre-conditions. The president and general secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress, Pema Rinzin and Tseten Dhondg respectively, said that Tibetans had been deeply affected by the sacrifice made by Gilles Blanchard. The Tibetans also organised a candle light vigil here.
