
CHANDIGARH, April 12: Further recording of evidence continued today in the Burail jail-break case in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge S.S. Lamba.
The condition of the accused Jagtar Singh Tara and Jaspal Singh Dhillon 8211; who have undertaken a fast-unto-death till they are allowed permission for baptism 8211; was such that they were brought to the courtroom on wheel chairs. Later, they were allowed to rest following permission of the court.
Deposing before the court, SP Baldev Singh stated that on June 11, 1996 he was at the headquarters, as a press conference had been called by the IG and SSP in this connection. Many press reporters and photographers were also present, he stated.
The police party, headed by Dilsher Singh, was in possession of two sealed packets of recovered RDX. He deposed that on the insistence of pressmen, the seals were opened. Later the packets were sealed again. During cross-examination, Baldev Singh revealed that he had not mentioned in his statement to the police that the IG and the SSP had called a press conference. He had also not stated that seals were opened on the insistence of mediapersons. Shamsher Singh, during his cross-examination said that he did not remember the number of the vehicle in which they had gone to the place where the RDX was recovered. The witness stated that he had gone there to meet one Kulwant Singh. The case will now come up on May 8.
