AMELIA ISLAND (US), April 10: Lisa Raymond posted her biggest victory of the year defeating third-seeded Monica Seles 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 in the third round of the Bausch and Lomb Championships.
The 10th-seeded Raymond was urged on by a cheering crowd as she battled back from an 0-5 deficit in the first set saving set point several times before finally forcing the tie-breaker.
Raymond, ranked 19th in the world and Seles, who is ranked no. 7 battled evenly in the tie-breaker until Raymond sent a blistering backhand past fellow American Seles to capture the set.
Second-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa beat Spain’s Magui Serna 6-3, 6-3 and Romania’s Ruxandra Dragomir 6-4, 6-7 (7-1), 6-0. Fifth-seeded Iva Majoli of Croatia beat Barbara Rittner of Germany 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the second round and followed that with a 6-4, 6-1 win over American Jennifer Capriati. Sixth-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain was dominating in her straight-set wins over Anne Miller of the United States 6-4, 6-3 and Maria AntoniaSanchez Lorenzo of Spain 6-3, 6-1.
Eighth-seeded Anna Kournikova of Russia beat no. 9 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland winning 6-1, 6-3 to move into the third round. Fourth-seeded Mary Pierce of France beat Catalina Cristea of Romania 6-1, 6-2 in the second round and then eliminated Elena Likhovtseva of Russia 6-4, 6-1.
