Far away from the silvery sands, moonlit nights and pulsating beats of techno-rave music, 22-year-old Akash name changed sits in silence in one corner of his room, gazing blankly at the ceiling.

Akash, once a regular raver, is now undergoing an intensive de-addiction session at a rehab centre at Kalyan run by the anti-drugs crusader Dr Yusuf Merchant.

8220;Intake of heavy doses of LSD and crack a free base form of cocaine that can be smoked at various rave parties has resulted in a permanent brain damage. The psychotropic drugs have damaged the pleasure zone8217; in Akash8217;s brain, rendering him totally devoid of any kind of physical pleasure,8221; Merchant said.

The Kalyan rehab centre has six patients who were affected after attending rave parties regularly just six months ago. Akash told Express Newsline, 8220;The initiation into drugs usually occurs at rave parties. Youngsters feel it is glamorous to take LSD or crack, and by the time they realise that they are clinically insane it is too late.8221;

Severalpsychotropic drugs are available at rave parties, including Ecstasy also called love drug, acid LSD, grass, hash and occasionally the expensive cocaine. 8220;Pure cocaine costs Rs 2800 per gram, while one can buy a tablet of Ecstasy for Rs 800. It is obvious that one has to be rich to rave. However, gullible youngsters fall easy prey to the drug abuse, leading to a sad end,8221; according to Merchant.

Merchant is currently treating a teenager who turned schizophrenic after she attending her first rave party. 8220;Her drink was heavily laced with the love drug. To top it all she also tried LSD and the deadly mix was enough to irreversibly damage her brain,8221; he said, adding the patient nearly died at the party.

The police raid on a rave party at Madh Islands on Sunday last may have thrown a wet blanket on the spirits of uninhibited young party animals, but die-hard revellers swear by the booze that the 8220;party will go on.8221; The state8217;s clampdown on rave parties is rubbished and the 8220;special brand of fun8221;unabashedly justified, no matter the association of such revelry with harmful drugs and unsafe sex. The common refrain of all ravers as they8217;re known in party circles: why does the state want to stop people from having fun?8220;Why should the government try to ban rave parties when we8217;re not harming anyone? We just want to have fun, and we don8217;t even spoil other people8217;s sleep because our parties are usually held on secluded beaches or beach bungalows,8221; says 25-year-old Vikas, a rave regular for the last four years.Only a select few are invited at private parties, says Vikas, but anyone can walk in and join a rave party, provided he/she shells out the entry fee that usually ranges from Rs 600 to Rs 2,000. 8220;The organisers make a real lumpsum, because at least 150 to 250 people attend a rave party.

The organisers themselves arrange for the booze and the dope, though most of the regular partygoers also carry their own stuff,8221; Vikas points out.Another regular Ajay Mehta 20, a TYBA student, has no qualmstalking about the 8220;inhibition-free behaviour8221; displayed at these parties. 8220;It is very natural to lose your inhibitions at rave parties. Once you are high on alcohol or acid LSD, with crazy techno music blaring, it feels like seventh heaven. In these circumstances, group sex orgies are considered as normal as sipping champagne,8221; he notes.He further says: 8220;Most of the girls who attend rave parties know very well what they8217;re in for. Their parents do not have an inkling of where they are or what they are doing. In the last rave party I attended at Madh, however, a teenaged girl8217;s drink was laced so heavily with the love drug Ecstasy that she kept proposing to every other boy at the party.8221; And like all the other revellers, he8217;s dead against imposing a ban on such parties. 8220;Rich kids, including children of industrialists, film stars and politicians come to these rave parties, so why is there such a big fuss? If police stop the rave scene at Madh, we8217;ll party at other beaches, or maybe at Khandala andLonavala.

We just like to party,8221; he quipped.However, rave parties across the city have now come to a halt with the arrest of the 150 revellers at Marve coast, and investigations have revealed startling facts about the rave party scenario in the metropolis, police claimed.The police squad that raided the party has seized a large number of condoms and a substantial amount of liquor, suggesting that the revellers were gearing up for a major orgy. Among those arrested at Madh islands were some female television artistes, air-hostesses and even a 60-year-old businessman who attended the party.

Now, investigations have revealed that most of the middle-aged women from rich families present at the party came from upmarket residential areas like Malabar Hill, Walkeshwar, Bandra west, Khar, Juhu and Versova.Police said middle-aged women from the upmarket localities look at rave parties as an opportunity to attract young men for the fulfilment of their physical desires. The young boys are usually lured duringthe merry-making and a long-term association sought to be established after the party is over, police informed.A senior police officer requesting anonymity said most of the temporary relationships thus formed are transformed into long-term sexual relationships. 8220;These parties have, in fact, become recruiting centres for partners in extra-martial sex life,8221; remarked another officer, saying the young men chosen by the women are rewarded both in cash and kind.

They are given gifts like a pair of jeans, T-shirts and expensive footwear, he pointed out.8220;It appears the Freudian theory is very much working, and almost all the participants have a perverted bent of mind,8221; the police officer added.
