In a shocking incident, a rape victim was beaten up in full public view in the capital allegedly by relatives and neighbours of the accused after raising questions about her character.

A group of people, including the wife of the accused, entered into an argument with the woman and slapped her with chappals besides showering blows in Mandawali last night, Deputy Commissioner of Police East Ajay Chaudhry said today.

A case was registered against five persons only this morning as the victim was not in a position to give her version about the sequence of events.

Chaudhury told PTI that the woman was under the influence of alcohol and this prevented the early registration of the case as she was not in a postion to give her statement.

The wife of the accused was arrested later today, police sources said.

The woman was taken to hospital by police but she left the place without informing anyone, he said, adding she was later traced back.

The woman, a 35-year-old widow who supplies domestic helps, had on April five alleged that she was raped by her landlord Ramkumar two days before when his wife was not present at their residence.

Ramkumar was arrested on the basis of the complaint and was sent to judicial custody, police sources said, adding the woman was continuing to stay in the same house.

She had allegedly demanded that Ramkumar should either leave his wife and stay with her or give her Rs two lakh and transfer the ownership of the house to her as compensation for withdrawing the case, sources said.
