MUMBAI, June 1: The Radio and Television Advertising Practitioners Awards RAPA night on May 30 was rather subdued, unlike most high profile advertising awards. Possibly because this is the last one for the advertising awards season, and also because it has not been publicized too much.

As the guest of honour Anupam Kher observed, pointing to the half-empty stadium, 8220;It8217;s sad that a body which gives out advertising awards does not advertise itself.8221;

But things got livelier as the night wore on. Gautam Rakshit, CEO, Advertising Avenues, was the chief guest. RAPA is the only body which gives awards for advertising in 14 Indian languages. Though there were no awards given in Punjabi, Konkani and Kannada, the maximum awards were given in the Marathi section.

The special awards generated the maximum excitement. The Hamid Sayani Trophy for all round contribution, Radio and TV went to Tariq Ansari of Mid-Day. The Sheel Kumar Trophy for outstanding performance on TV went to Sonali Kulkarni for the serial Kata Rute Kunala. The K K Suvarna award for outstanding performance on radio was bagged by L V Mankani.

Karan Razdan took home the best script award for a Hindi TV programme for Tehkikat. As expected, HTA Delhi won the best campaign of the year for Pepsi. Among the other popular awards, production house Highlight Video and Nexus Equity won the best English TV commercial for Ericsson mobile phones, and O amp; M8217;s Asian Paints was judged the best non-film radio spot in English. The highlight of the evening was a puppetry skit by Ramdas and Aparna Padhye. A finely executed parody of advertising, one of the puppets suspiciously resembled Alyque Padamsee!
