It was a quiet farewell for NCERT director Professor J.S. Rajput today, with the camps as sullen and divided as they were during his tenure. Loyalists wished he had got more credit for his achievements while opponents were convinced the 8216;8216;politics in education8217;8217; does not end with his tenure.

8216;8216;I have demitted office today with a Supreme Court judgment in the forenoon approving the syllabus prepared by NCERT for environmental education in schools from Class I to XII,8217;8217; said Rajput. 8216;8216;This will be mandatory for all schools and NCERT has been appointed the nodal agency to monitor this. Professionally, this is an extremely satisfying day for me as this syllabus was prepared by an NCERT group under my chairmanship.8217;8217;

Rajput had one more year to go but opted out after the NDA government was voted out of power. A formal handover took place this afternoon where IGNOU V-C H.P. Dikshit took over as officiating director. While some of his staffers turned up at his office on his last day in work, most celebrated his exit.

8216;8216;He has not left in the right manner. He should have been given a better farewell,8217;8217; said an employee. Among his achievements, they count the increase in the number of publications, programmes with institutes abroad and emphasis on teacher8217;s training.

Rajput isn8217;t denying credit either. 8216;8216;In the last five years, the output has increased and the faculty and employees have contributed much more than before,8217;8217; he said. 8216;8216;I intend to continue work in the field of value education and in teaching the legacy and basics of all religions to achieve social cohesiveness and national integration.8217;8217;

Prof Saradindu Mukherji wouldn8217;t agree: 8216;8216;He went out of the way to spoil my manuscript in 2003. Even when I pointed out the errors he refused to respond. However, Rajput was just one in a large pool and even with him gone, politics at NCERT will not stop.8221;
