
At least 25 people are feared dead after a lorry carrying them was swept away by strong currents on a flooded bridge in Guntur district.
The incident occurred around 12 noon when about 40 villagers were fleeing the flooded Narkulapadu village. Police said while seven bodies have been recovered, only eight persons could swim to safety. Guntur police control room said rescue teams located the truck in eight to 10 feet deep water. Police said they were trying to send fire personnel to try and extricate any bodies.
Police said the villagers had hired the truck as the AP state transport corporation had suspended services in the region.
Most of the rivers and rivulets were overflowing as heavy rains battered coastal and central Andhra on Sunday too. The Met Department has warned of more heavy rains across the state, especially in coastal Andhra in the next 24 hours.
The state Government has put the official death toll at 40 on Sunday.
Widespread rains continued in Warangal, Khammam, Nizamabad, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts. Krishna district received 10 cms rain in the last 24 hours. Hyderabad, which received 13 cms rain on Friday, received 9 cms rain on Saturday. Disaster Management Commissioner Ratna Prabha said 37,500 people living in low-lying areas have been shifted to 119 relief camps opened in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, West Godavari, Nalgonda, East Godavari, Krishna and Guntur districts.
