Bad weather forced the first one-day international between Bangladesh and the West Indies to be abandoned as ‘no result’ here today.
Bangladesh, chasing a target of 276, were struggling at 90-4 in 17 overs when rain hit the M.A. Aziz Stadium and forced play to be stopped. The umpires abandoned the match after the interruption left no time to complete a minimum of 25 overs in Bangladesh’s innings.
The second and third internationals will be played under lights in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Monday and Tuesday. The rain allowed Bangladesh to wriggle out of a tight situation after West Indian fast boler Vasbert Drakes sliced through the top order with all four wickets. Bangladesh were reduced to 52-4 before Sanwar Hossain (16 not out) and Alok Kapali (20 not out) added 38 for the unbroken fifth wicket. Earlier, Ricardo Powell smashed 88 off 50 balls as the Windies piled up 275-7 after being sent to bat by Bangladeshi captain Khaled Mashud.
