The Congress party today said the 8220;ripple8221; created by Rahul Gandhi8217;s remarks on the Babri Masjid demolition were 8220;intended8221; and it had helped put issues in the right perspective in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.
8220;I share his view. It has certainly sent a ripple and it was intended8230; There is reaction from the desired quarter,8221; AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh told reporters. He disagreed with a questioner that Rahul8217;s statement that the demolition had not taken place had a member of Nehru-Gandhi family been in politics at that time would result in polarisation of voters in the key state.
Singh also dismissed suggestions that the remarks would help revive the dead Ayodhya issue. He said the BJP would continue to rake up the issue till they come back to power at the Centre.
Singh also said Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao was wrong in trusting the VHP and BJP in 1992 during the crisis over the disputed structure in Ayodhya. 8220;Narasimha Rao, unfortunately, believed those people, who should not have been believed. It was certainly a mistake. Rao had himself admitted that he was misled on the affidavit filed by the VHP and the BJP leaders,8221; he said.
To a question on the criticism that Rahul8217;s comments were an indictment of Congress itself, he said, 8220;It was not indictment. The conditions were different.8221;
