LYON, October 20: Second-seeded Australian Pat Rafter breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 win over American Steve Campbell on Tuesday in the first round of the 725,000 Lyon Grand Prix ATP Tour tournament here. The two-time US Open champion took just 67 minutes to seal his spot in the second round.

South African Wayne Ferreira beat British qualifier Danny Sapsford 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, while Frenchmen Fabrice Santoro and Olivier Delaitre also advanced.Santoro, the eighth seed, beat his compatriot Stephane Huet 6-3, 6-3 and Delaitre downed Spaniard Julian Alonso 6-3, 6-1. Richey Reneberg, a doubles specialist ranked 182nd, triumphed 7-6 7/5, 6-7 4/7, 6-2 in an all-American struggle with Vince Spadea.

Top-seeded Pete Sampras, the world number one, plays his first-round match on Wednesday night against compatriot Todd Martin.

Scud and Goran Czech out

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic: The fifth and sixth seeds, Goran Ivanisevic and Mark 8216;Scud8217; Philippoussis crashed out of the 975,000 Czech Indoor event at the first hurdlehere on Tuesday. Croatia8217;s Ivanisevic fell to little-known Slovak Jan Kroslak, who won 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 7/4 and Czech-born David Prinosil of Germany ousted Philippoussis 6-3, 6-7 8 /10, 6-3.

Fourth-seeded Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov put out another Australian, Richard Fromberg, 7-6 7/4, 6-3, while home hopes Bohdan Ulihrach and Martin Damm advanced.
