Monsoon hits Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The south-west monsoon set in over Kerala on Tuesday, with most parts of the state receiving good rainfall and providing welcome relief to the people from the summer heat. The normal date for the monsoon to set over the state is June 1. However, in the last two years, the monsoon arrived only on June 8 and 9. The weather men predict that the state would receive a normal rainfall during the current south-west monsoon.

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu Governor Fatima Beevi today met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani separately here today after which she said she was “satisfied” with the law and order situation in the state.
Sugar baron slain
KOLHAPUR: In a bizarre chain of incidents, two persons, including a director of a sugar factory, were shot dead here last night. According to police, sugar factory director Namdeo Gopal Bandivdekar, an alleged suspect in last week’s murder of Chandgarh’s DaulatShetkari cooperative sugar factory director Marooti Sattappa Bandivdekar, was sprayed with bullets by assailants from a car while he was being interrogated by the police. The assailants, reportedly led by the brother of Marooti, Suresh Bandivdekar, were chased by the officials of crime branch and were intercepted near Maharashtra-Karnataka border. When challenged they opened fire at the police, who also retaliated. In the cross-firing Suresh was killed.

IMPHAL: A group of armed activists attacked a police team and snatched Rs 91,809 cash and arms at Wangoo area in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Tuesday, official sources said here.

LESIGNY, (FRANCE): Brazil were forced to axe striker Romario from their World Cup football squad today after he failed to recover from a nagging calf muscle injury. Coach Mario Zagallo caused a major surprise by naming defensive mid-fielder Emerson Ferreira of Bayer Leverkusen as Romario’s replacement. Romario, player of the tournamentwhen Brazil won the World Cup four years ago, broke down and wept as he faced the media.
