Parched throats will sip on sake and shochu and nibble on salmon teriyaki as Ai, the Japanese restaurant at The Metropolitan Mall, opens its bar today. Called The Love Hotel, Ai8217;s bar is set to soak in the Japanese aura further as DJ Super Cozi weaves a nuanced, electronic beat into some fast, thumping trance music. 8220;It8217;s my first time in India and I8217;m really looking forward to my performance,8221; says Cozi who has already performed in Mumbai and Bangalore with some success. Today, Cozi will belt out her mix of acid jazz and break beats at The Love Hotel.
A mother of two, the 42-year-old DJ is also a composer, producer and owner of the three-year-old record label called Hypo=Espresso Records that promotes independent artists and producers.
8220;As an artist I have seen the bad side of being with a major label. The constant fights affect one8217;s creativity,8221; says Bali-based Cozi, who started at a young age with a punk band in Tokyo in the late 1980s and has been experimenting with strong techno sounds and a psychedelic twist to her songs ever since.
As she prepares to release her fifth solo album Babylondon in the coming months, her trip to India, she says, is also about promoting her band, Zen Lemonade. 8220;Babylondon is a dance compilation and I will be playing some of the songs from it,8221; she says. Cozi is known to throw in a dash of retro flavour into her performances, right from Led Zeppelin to Herbie Hancock. 8220;Retro pushes up the tempo in a bar. It8217;s going to be fun,8221; says Cozi. Get ready to rock, Japanese style.
