Oil tanker derails, two women dead
Two women labourers working on railway track repairs were killed when an oil tanker derailed near Theur phata between Uruli and Loni stations on the Pune-Daund section of the Central railway this morning. Five other women labourers were grievously injured in the mishap.

One of the deceased was Chiti Suriya Khatrot (20), of Andhra Pradesh. The second victim was yet to be identified. The mishap occurred at around 11 a.m near Theur where work on changing of rail sleepers was in progress. Over fifty labourers were working at the site near Theur.

As a goods train was proceeding towards Pune from Uruli Kanchan, the labourers had moved from the tracks. The wagon, sixteenth from the engine, derailed and fell on the side of the tracks. About six labourers standing near the track were trapped under the derailed wagon.

Khatrot died on the spot. Five women who were injured have been admitted to the Sassoon Hospital. The names of the injured were Bharati Khathot, Devi Mudavat, Sona Bhoja Khetavat, Shanti Lachu Khetavat and Bodi Balu Mudavat, all residents of Andhra Pradesh. The labourers were residing in the tents nearby.

RPI president today
The Central Executive Committee of the Republican Party of India (RPI) will meet in the city on Saturday to elect its president and the other office bearers.

Lok Sabha member Ramdas Athawale is likely to be elected as the president since the party’s leader R S Gawai had announced that he was not interested in continuing.

The meeting will take place at Ganesh Kala Krida Kendra at Nehru Stadium, named after Annabhau Sathe. The meeting will start at 11 am. The open session of the national convention will be held on Sunday at Race Course. More than five lakh RPI workers from all parts of the country are expected to attend the meet.

Meanwhile, RPI leader Ramdas Athawale today alleged that the proposed third front by Prakash Ambedkar would help the saffron alliance in the State. Talking to media persons, Athawale said the third front would have emerged as the alternative to Congress and the communal forces if it was strong enough. He said secular forces would have to help Congress if they genuinely want to prevent the communal forces from taking power.
