University promotes BE students
As an exceptional decision exclusively for the academic year 1999-2000, the academic council of the University of Pune on Tuesday decided to allow second and third year engineering students 8217;90 course promotion to final year BE irrespective of the number of backlogs, provided they satisfied the existing ATKT allowed to keep term rules, said Vice-chancellor Dr Arun Nigavekar today.

Students can appear for BE final examinations 8217;90 syllabus only if they clear all second and third year backlogs or if they satisfy the existing ATKT rules.

In an another significant decision, the report of the Shitole Committee on restructuring of fees for courses of all faculties, was accepted in principle by the academic council, said Dr Nigavekar. Implementation of the recommendations now depends on approval of the management council and clearance by the State Government.

Political rivalry behind murder?
Different versions did the rounds in city over the murder of a man in Pimpri last evening with certain sections alleging that political rivalry led to the incident. However, the police maintain the incident was a fallout a property dispute. According to the first information report FIR filed by Motiram Rambhau Rao, he was attacked along with some of his friends by Babu Pawar and his accomplices. Rao and his friends, Kishore Lashkare, Nagesh Natekar and Baban Kakade were sitting near the Poligras Hockey Stadium to attend a Satyanarayan pooja when Pawar and his accomplices attacked them with swords and iron rods. In the melee, one of the accused, Faroukh Inamdar, allegedly stabbed Natekar in the stomach with a sword. Natekar was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

While it has been alleged that the fight was a result of political rivalry, Police Commissioner K K Kashyap denied any political angle. 8220;The fight was a result of certain property disputes and complaints have been filed by both the groups. On Monday the groups entered into an argument which took a nasty turn, but we have arrested five persons in this regard and the Pimpri police are conducting further investigations.8221;

Man, son killed n TWO persons were brutally killed in Walchandnagar, allegedly murdered by a Zilla Parishad school teacher, in the early hours of Tuesday. According to the police, Gangaram Rama Dnane 60 and his son Vithal 32 were done to death when they tried to intervene in a famil dispute.

The accused, Shankar Tukaram Kawane, police say, was involved in a dispute with his father for a number of years. Tempers were frayed when Gangaram and his son tried to intervene.

According to the complaint by Gangaram8217;s younger son Ramesh, the accused entered their premises in the early hours and stabbed the two repeatedly killing them on the spot. While the Walchandnagar police have filed a case of murder they were yet to make any arrests till late Tuesday evening.
