Bhog to move against PCB
Reacting to the Pune Cantonment Board8217;s decision to file a defamation suit against him, advocate N K Bhog on Thursday said that he would a suit against the board challenging 8220;the grounds on which the kiosk near Rani Laxmibai Garden was sanctioned by it8221;.

8220;It is a totally illegal on part of the board to allot a stall on public land by blatantly ignoring the law. And in any case, how is that no public tenders were invited for allotting the kiosk?,8221; he argued.

The board, at its yesterday8217;s meeting, had unanimously resolved to file a defamation suit against Bhog. The board has charged Bhog 8220;with making unjust allegations against the administration and elected members over shifting of the the kiosk8221;.

PCB also decided to withdraw 13 cases being handled by Bhog before filing the defamation suit against him. At the meeting, presided over by Brig Madan Gopal, the members maintained that the allocation of stall was done in accordance with the Cantonment Act.

Criticising Bhog8217;s 8220;anti-cantonment8221; remarks in his article published in a local daily regarding the shifting of kiosk issue, the newly elect vice-president Nizam Kazi said that Bhog should have approached the board office-bearers 8220;before levelling arbitrary charges against them8221;.

Dassera celebrated
Traditional fervour and enthusiasm marked the celebrations of the Dassera festival in the city on Thursday. The festival, symbolising the victory of good over evil, was celebrated by burning of the effigies of Ravana, and by taking out colourful tableaux processions of Lord Rama.

New social programmes and business activities were inaugurated during the day, also considered auspicious for purchasing gold, silver and consumer durables. Shops and houses were colourfully decorated and people greeted each other with joy.

Elders and children thronged in great numbers to witness the burning of effigy of Ravana at the B.J. Medical college ground. The programme was organised by Prem Advani Friends Circle. Director of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Shankar Yadav was the chief guest. There also was a display of fireworks. The nine-day Durga Mahotsav organised by the Bengali community in the city and neigbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad culminated today with the holding of Vijayi sammelan and processions of Goddess Durga.

Cop attacked
A police constable from the Sahakarnagar police station was injured when he was attacked by a unidentified person with knife near the Rajbaug restaurant on Pune-Satara Road late on Wednesday evening.

Sub-inspector S S Bhosale from Sahakarnagar police chowkie remained a silent spectator as the constable, S S Khedekar, was stabbed by the miscreant, a FIRlodged at the Sahakarnagar police station said. Bhosale and Khedekar were patrolling on the Pune-Satara Road when they noticed three persons getting indulged in a fight. Khedekar was stabbed when he tried to intervene, the FIR said.
