NOVEMBER 21: Children below the age of five were administered the second dose of the anit-polio vaccine in all parts of the state today. The first dose was given on October 24. The third and fourth dose of the pulse polio immunisation vaccine will be administered on December 19 and January 23 2000.In 1991, 1,041 cases of polio were detected, in 1998, the number came down to 228 and in 1999 it was 15. The doses were administered to children at hospitals and booths set up for the purpose.

State health minister Digvijay Khanvilkar has expressed the hope that by 2000, the disease would be completely erradicated.

About 6,800 centres and ten mobile centres were established throughout Mumbai to administer pulse polio immunisation to the children.
