
CHANDIGARH, Feb 26: More than one hundred sport persons, including women, who have represented Punjab University in the All India Inter-University meets during the 1998-99 session, and have won first four positions in the individual and team events will be honoured by the Punjab University Sports Department on March 14. The felicitation ceremony will be held at PU Gymnasium.
Among the list of sports persons to be honoured in the women8217;s section includes basketball team, which won the title in the All India Inter-University for the fourth consecutive time. PU women judokas were also victorious in the All India meet. However, in tennis, the women8217;s team improved their standing from fourth to second this year.
In the men8217;s group, the judo team were proud winner in the All India meet, which was one step better than last year. Both Handball and badminton teams were also placed second in the All India meet.
Some athletes also excelled in the individual events. Tarminder Pal Singh and Gurpreet Singh, both bagged gold medals in their respective events in athletics in the All India meet. Gurpreet struck first position in 110-metre hurdles while Tarminder Singh won 400-metre hurdle.
On the occasion, overall trophies for supremacy in the PU Inter-College meets would also be awarded to the respective colleges in the men and women sections.
