Mumbai, July 11: Public sector banks contributed 54 per cent of total deposits of the banking sector. The State Bank of India and its associate banks accounted for 24.7 per cent of the total deposit base.

According to the "Banking Statistics Quarterly Handout–March 2000" brought out by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), private sector banks made up for 11.7 per cent of the deposits, foreign banks 5.7 per cent and regional rural banks 3.9 per cent.

The top 100 centres arranged for 59 per cent of the total deposits. They also made up for 74.7 per cent of the total bank credit. State run banks accounted for 47.6 per cent of the total bank credit with SBI and its associates 29.1 per cent and other scheduled commercial banks, foreign banks and regional rural banks accounting for 12.4 per cent, 8 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively.

Sikkim registered the highest growth rate for deposits at 49.2 per cent followed by Daman & Diu at 27.3 per cent, Dadra & Nagar Haveli at 27 per cent, Orissa at 24.4 per cent, Meghalaya at 22.9 per cent and Andhra Pradesh at 22.4 per cent.

Growth in bank credit was highest in Arunachal Pradesh at 30.5 per cent followed by Maharashtra at 27.9 per cent, Dadra & Nagar Haveli at 27 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir at 26.5 per cent and Delhi at 27.4 per cent.

Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat accounted for 59.4 per cent of the aggregate deposits. Mahrashtra, Delhi, TN, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal accounted for 70.4 per cent of the gross bank credit. Maharashtra has contributed to 18.6 per cent of total deposit and 27.3 per cent of the total credit.

The all-India credit-deposit (CD) ratio as on March 31, 2000 was at 57.1 per cent. The ratio was highest for foreign banks at 80.1 per cent followed by SBI and its associates at 67.2 per cent and other scheduled banks at 60.6 per cent.
