CUTTACK, JANUARY 7: Strong contenders Petroleum Sports Control Board, Railways, Bengal and Tamil Nadu qualified for the semi-finals in the men’s and women’s category of the ongoing 62nd National and inter-state table tennis championship here on Sunday.

After three days of grueling competition, the four teams reached this level after winning their quarter-final ties with ease. While reigning champions PSCB will meet Bengal in the men’s semifinal later today, Railways will clash with Tamil Nadu for the other berth in the final.

In the women’s section, PSCB will play Tamil Nadu while Bengal will take on Railways in the two semifinals. PSCB, Bengal, Rajasthan and Maharahstra-B had topped their respective groups in the men’s category while the two teams occupying the second and third spots in each group had to play pre-quarter-finals to fill up the four other quarter-final slots.

The four teams to have topped the groups in the women’s section were PSCB, Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Railways. In the men’s quarter-final ties, PSCB outplayed Uttar Pradesh 3-0 while Bengal beat Delhi 3-1.

In two other matches, Railways fought hard to overcome Rajasthan 3-2 and Tamil Nadu outclassed Maharashtra-B 3-0. PSCB with a daunting line-up, outplayed Maharashtra-a 3-1in the women’s section while Tamil Nadu defeated Maharashtra-B 3-2.
