Protest rally

Chandigarh, March 8: Sacked contract labourers and daily wage workers of the Chandigarh Telecom Department, held a rally outside the Telephone Exchange in Sector 34 to protest against their ouster and also complaining of being underpaid in the past.

An estimated 500 persons were engaged by the department as sanitation workers, clerks, peons, drivers and data entry operators through contractors, Tanved Ali, general secretary of the Telecom Department, Chandigarh, Daily Wage Workers Union, said. He added that the workers were thrown out on March 1 without assigning reasons or issuing them notices.

The workers will take out a procession from Sector 34 to Sector 17 on Tuesday, it was added.
