The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) on Wednesday issued the final notification of ward delimitation, bringing with it some key changes, most notably the interchange of Ward Numbers 32 and 39.
As per the final notification, Ward No. 39 has been renumbered as Ward No. 32, while Ward No. 32 has now become Ward No. 39. This change has also altered the reservation status of the two wards. Ward No. 39, which was earlier reserved for women, has now become Ward No. 32 and has been declared a General ward. Conversely, Ward No. 32, which was earlier a General ward, has now been renumbered as Ward No. 39 and reserved for women.
Ward No. 32 includes Sector 70 and parts of Sohana and Ward No. 39 mainly comprises Sohana village.
Apart from this, according to information received, minor changes have also been made in some other wards, including the shifting of certain streets from one ward to another. Barring these adjustments, the final notification remains largely the same as the earlier draft notification.
With the issuance of the final ward delimitation and the freezing of ward boundaries from Wednesday, political activity in the city is expected to intensify sharply in the New Year.
Aspirants planning to contest the upcoming Municipal Corporation (MC) elections have already become active. Several leaders had begun groundwork in their earlier wards over the past six months, however, due to large-scale changes and expansion of ward boundaries, they will now have to restart their preparations afresh.
The Congress has accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of “deliberately” redrawing ward boundaries and reserving wards represented by Congress councillors.
Despite these allegations, Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu remains confident, stating that Congress councillors will win in large numbers in the upcoming elections and that the Congress will once again capture the mayoral post in the Mohali MC.
Meanwhile, leaders from MLA Kulwant Singh’s group have claimed that given the condition in which the Congress has run the civic body, people will not even allow Congress candidates to enter the wards, let alone vote for them.
With the final ward delimitation now in place, discussions have also intensified that the Punjab Local Government Department may announce municipal elections soon. There is speculation that elections could be held by the end of February, as school examinations begin in March, during which a large number of teachers are deployed on duty.
Also, the Punjab Assembly elections are scheduled for February 2027, which further tightens the political calendar. As a result, the government is likely to prefer early municipal elections. However, the term of the Mohali MC, as well as several other councils in the district and across Punjab, is still technically pending. Specifically in Mohali, councillors had taken oath in April, and unless the corporation is dissolved earlier, they will continue in office till April.
