SHIMLA, SEPT 1: The Central Forensic Science Labouratory CFSL, Calcutta has taken up a Rs 4 crore project for creating a DNA profile-based data bank to establish the racial identity of the persons suspected to be involved in crimes.

The CFSL was collecting 85,000 blood samples through seven satellite centres including Himachal, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Gujarat and set up a standaridised data bank by preparing genetic profiles of these blood samples, the Government Examiner of Questioned Documents GEQD, S. Day told mediapersons while handing over charge to his predecessor, Amar Singh.

He said the data bank would be of great help in establishing the area and origin of the suspected persons and facilitate the National Crime Records Bureau to achieve higher degree of accuracy in pinpointing the culprits.

He said the plastic currency and cyber crime had posed a big challenge and shifted the scene of crime from streets to drawing rooms, resulting in sharp increase in white collar crimes.

He said that the role of fingerprint experts had also changed to role of forensic experts and their was need for training, retraining, awareness, linkages and dissemination of knowledge to detect and prevent the cyber crimes.
