AHMEDABAD, Nov 16: Standing committee chairman Dharmendra Shah has ordered a vigilance inquiry into the purchase of substandard automobile parts by the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service AMTS officials.

Shah said that after the transport committee meeting on Saturday, he took round of the stores and even the workshop and on checking 160 newly arrived bus seats, he felt the goods were substandard. He said usually the seats are embossed by the supplier, but in these cases those were just stamped. He found quality of all the seats were substandard.

Shah said that samples of five seats were taken and an inquiry was ordered in the matter. On checking the diesel filter, supplied by the Ashok Leyland company, were found crushed. Shah said it was felt that the goods were either old or reprocessed. He checked some 10 filters and all were found defective. Besides, on checking the bearing, the outer layer were found old with only the ball bearing being changed. He said these were also in sealed packets. Shah said not only bearing and filters, even the break liners were also below specification.

Shah said all the goods have been seized by vigilance officer who would submit report after investigation within 15 days. Shah said that action would only be decided on the basis of the report. It is reported that even the transport manager admitted that the parts were old and substandard.
