MUMBAI, July 10: Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Gopinath Munde on Thursday said the government would appoint an officer of the rank of additional DG to inquire into complaints of forced conversions in the state.

He was replying to a question from Sudhir Mungantiwar about conversions of adivasis in Melghat, Amravati district, to Christianity.

Munde said he was aware of conversions taking place in Dharavi in Mumbai, though the police had not received any complaints about the use of force or allurement in the conversion.

Replying to another question he said he was aware of foreign funds being pumped into several groups who carried out conversions in the state, but the Central Government was responsible for monitoring those funds.

Replying to another question raised by Digvijay Khanvilkar of the Congress, Munde assured the Assembly that there would be no load shedding in the state by next year. Replying to a question raised by Digvijay Khanvilkar of the Congress and others, Munde said besides the major power projects, ten projects of 400 KW would be set up in the state in the next Five Year Plan.He said though the installed capacity of power in the state was at present 11500 MW, the government wanted to extend it to 20,000 MW. He also said the cabinet had not taken any decision on the privatisation of power distribution in the state, despite the recommendations of the Rajadhyaksha Committee.

Several members sought the reasons for frequent power failures in the state. PWP member Meenakshi Patil complained that Alibag faced load shedding for almost nine hours every day. Other members complained about power disruptions affecting industries and water supply. Members of the Samajwadi Party walked out of the house after the speaker denied them permission to ask questions due to the paucity of time.
