Zareen settles for silver

The 17-year-old from Andhra fought bravely,but her opponent was equal to the task.

Indias Nikhat Zareen 54kg settled for a silver medal after her winning run was finally halted at the AIBA Womens Youth World Boxing Championships in Albena,Bulgaria on Sunday. Up against Yunzi Yuan of China,the 17-year-old from Andhra fought bravely,but her opponent was equal to the task. Zareen tried hard to penetrate Yuans guard,but the Chinese blocked well and kept scoring points on the counter. Zareen,who won the flyweight division gold medal at the inaugural edition of the AIBA Womens junior World Championship,has moved into the youth category and fights in the bantamweight division.

Kipsang breaks marathon WR

Kenyan Wilson Kipsang made the most of the notoriously flat and fast Berlin streets to smash the marathon world record by 15 seconds en route to taking the title on Sunday. The 31-year-old Kipsang clocked a time of two hours,three minutes and 23 seconds to better the previous mark set two years ago in the same race by compatriot Patrick Makau,who was forced to pull out through injury two weeks ago. Kipsang,who won the 2012 London Marathon and also took bronze at the Olympics,produced a storming finish to leave compatriot Eliud Kipchoge a distant second almost a minute behind.

Marquez closes in on title

Spaniard Marc Marquez edged closer to the world title with a win at the Aragon MotoGP ahead of Jorge Lorenzo on Sunday,when another of his closest challengers,Dani Pedrosa,crashed out in spectacular fashion. The 20-year-old rookie started on pole but needed to reel in world champion Lorenzo,who had made a flying start to hit the front,and he eventually passed the Yamaha rider with 10 laps to go and cruised to his sixth win. Meanwhile,Team Mahindra enjoyed a double top-10 finish at the Aragon Grand Prix in Moto3 class of the Moto GP championship as Miguel Oliveira took a hard-fought fifth place and Efren Vazquez finished tenth.

Arjun makes double podium

Arjun Maini took the chequered flag in race 3 after finishing second in race 2 as the young racer spiced up the Formula BMW series in the JK Tyre Racing Championship. On day two of round three,there was a tremendous fight in the the JK Racing India Series as championship leader Vishnu Prasad took a hard-earned victory over the winner of the first race,Arjun by a mere 1.3 seconds. Mahaveer Rangunathan claimed third. The championship came alive in race three as Maini,15,emerged winner and Vishnu could manage third position while Chittesh Mandody finished second. The championship will be decided in the concluding round.

Gill closes in on APRC title

Indian rally ace Gaurav Gill inched towards 2013 FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship title after winning Rally Hokkaido in Japan,the penultimate round of the series. Gills closest rival and MRF team-mate Esapekka Lappi was forced to retire for the third time this season when suspension failure on his Fabia thwarted his charge. Lappi incurred suspension damage on Saturdays ninth test. As the Finn was unable to restart on day two,Gill began Sundays stages with a comfortable lead. The Team MRF driver adopted a cautious driving approach in order to secure crucial championship points and now leads the overall standings.
