Wage ‘jehad’ against terrorists, grand Sheikh urges Pak clerics

A top Islamic cleric has asked Pakistani religious leaders to wage a jehad against terrorists who do not surrender to the government.

A top Islamic cleric has asked Pakistani religious leaders to wage a jehad against terrorists who do not surrender to the government and refuse to stop their subversive activities.

Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar University in Cairo Muhammad Syed Tantawi made these remarks during a meeting with chairman of the Central Imam Hussain Council Ghazanfar Mehdi, who called on him in Egypt recently.

Terrorists who are slaughtering innocent people like animals are out of Islam. Ulema (clerics) and Mashaikh (religious leaders) should try to educate them and if they do not shun their activities, then they must wage jehad against them, Tantawi said.

The Grand Sheikh, considered to be one of the most important personalities in Egypt and across the Muslim world, expressed his best wishes for the security, stability and prosperity of Pakistan.

Commenting on Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariah Muhammadi chief Sufi Muhammad’s statements about parliament, superior courts and democracy being us-Islamic,Tantawi said the constitution of Pakistan states clearly that no law can be enacted that is contrary to Islam.

Sufi Muhammad had helped broker the peace deal with the Taliban in Swat that subsequently fell apart due to violations of the accord by the militants.

Tantawi urged the world community to help Pakistan in its hour of trial and to meet the needs of the people displaced by the military operations against the militants in Buner,Dir and Swat.
