A high-profile cricketers vs politicians contest is on cards when Mumbai Cricket Association MCA goes for elections next month. With former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar and central minister Vilasrao Deshmukh keen to challenge incumbent MCA president Sharad Pawar,the battle lines are drawn. Those in the know say that it might turn out to be a four-way battle as Maharashtra8217;s revenue minister Narayan Rane too might throw his hat in the ring.
Vengsarkar confirmed that he was keen to be at MCA8217;s helm. I will be contesting the election this time and I don8217;t want to comment anything more on this at the moment, said Vengsarkar.
National Congress Party8217;s NCP Pawar,who has been the MCA president for the last eight years four terms,was given an extension during the last election after the constitution was amended. During his tenure he become BCCI chief and is currently the International Cricket Council ICC president.
Congress leader Deshmukh,who represents Mazgaon Cricket Club and is vice-president in the MCA,has informed his Club members about his desire to contest for the post of president this time. Mazgaon CC secretary Alam Shaikh confirmed this development. Mr Deshmukh told us that he will be contesting for the president8217;s post this time. We are confident that he will win again. Lets see how things go, said Shaikh.
Shiv Sena leader Rane,who represented Dadar8217;s Eleven 77 Sports Club at the MCA elections last year,might turn out to be dark horse of this intriguing election.
The list of prolific candidates doesn8217;t end here. Vijay Patil,the man who owns the DY Patil Stadium and son of Tripura governor DY Patil will be contesting for the post of vice-president. I have decided to contest this time for vice-president,let8217;s see how things go, Vijay said.
Though it is still early,the buzz among the members is that several former cricketers are expected to rally around Vengsarkar in this battle. The MCA managing committee is scheduled to meet on May 10 to decide the election date.
