Uruguay,Mexico close in on WC

Defender Paul Aguilar opened the scoring and Raul Jimenez added a second to give Mexico a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Uruguay are all but assured of a place at the 2014 World Cup finals after Edinson Cavani led the twice champions to a 5-0 away rout of Jordan in the first leg of their qualifying playoff on Wednesday.

The Paris St Germain striker scored a brilliant free kick and had a hand in two other goals.

Mexico city: Mexico thumped New Zealand 5-1 in the first leg of their qualifying playoff on Wednesday to take a massive step towards a place in next year8217;s World Cup finals at the Azteca Stadium.
