Trophy hunters litter last 16

On first Saturday,Federer,Wozniacki join defending champs Nadal and Serena in 4th rd.

The mercury was rising at Wimbledon on Saturday as the serial trophy hunters gathered in the last 16 with defending champions Rafa Nadal,Serena Williams and Roger Federer leading the charge. Fifth seed Robin Soderling became the highest mens seed to fall, beaten in straight sets by 18-year-old Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic, but Nadal was in miserly mood as he finished off Luxembourgs Gilles Muller 7-6 7-6 6-0 on Number One court.

Williams, seeded seventh after her return from 11 months of serious health problems, made the most emphatic statement yet about her prospects by blasting past Russias Maria Kirilenko 6-3 6-2. Maria Sharapova, the 2004 winner, also took her customary place in the second week as the fifth seed overpowered Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-2 6-3 on Court Two.

World No 1,Wozniacki,still waiting to join the elite club of grand slam champions, enjoyed her upgrade on Centre Court for an easy third-round win over 27th seed Jarmila Gajdosova. She then made way for the clubs most decorated member to strut his stuff in the sunshine. Swiss maestro Federer, his eyes fixed on Pete Samprass record seven Wimbledon mens titles, produced another masterclass to dismantle David Nalbandian 6-4 6-2 6-4.

A guy who has beaten me eight times knows how to beat me again so I am very pleased to go through, Federer, who has not dropped a set this week, said after setting up a fourth-round date with Nicolas Almagro or Mikhail Youzhny.

So that8217;s also where the pressure is greater against a player like him because maybe he8217;s not going to win the tournament but he can knock you out of the tournament. That8217;s a danger against a player like him. I played well from start to finish. I am playing better than last year more confident on serve and more relaxed with my returns. I think I played a great match.

After a stop-start tournament so far,the 125th championships are now simmering nicely with all the ingredients in place for a tasty second week. Monday will be kind of cool when all the men play at the same time, said 29-year-old third seed Federer, who will play Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

Nadal, defending his title for the first time after injury deprived him of the honour in 2009,returned to Court One a set to the good after rain had stopped play on Friday. After more dogged resistance from wildcard Muller, the last man to beat him at Wimbledon other than Federer,Nadal roared through. Seems like the best players are all playing well, the 25-year-old told reporters. I dont know if I gonna win my next round. Probably the rest of the players thinks the same.

UNFORCED ERRORS

Nadal, who committed just three unforced errors against Muller and is yet to drop a set,had reason for caution as his last 16 opponent is 2009 U.S. champion Juan Martin del Potro after the Argentine powerhouse beat Frenchman Gilles Simon.

Tomic, the youngest player in the mens draw who is poised to end Lleyton Hewitts 11-year reign as Australian number one,won the first four games of the match and twice French Open runner-up Soderling crumbled to a 6-1 6-4 7-5 defeat.

Sixth seed Tomas Berdych, the man Nadal beat to claim his second Wimbledon crown last year,is also looking a threat again after an easy third-round win over Alex Bogomolov Jr.,a result that left Mardy Fish as the sole American survivor in the mens draw. Its lonely. It doesnt feel great. And thats not the goal, said 10th seed Fish, who faces Berdych next.

Ninth seed Gael Monfils bowed out to Polish doubles specialist Lukasz Kubot who reached the last 16 of a major singles draw for the second time in his career.

Last years French Open winner Francesca Schiavone was bundled out by Austria Tamira Paszek, losing the deciding set 11-9,and former world number one Ana Ivanovic, also a Roland Garros winner, lost 6-2 7-6 to Petra Cetkovska.

Lee-Hesh ousted

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi blew away a strong start to make a shock exit from the mens doubles as they lost the second round 6-2 3-6 6-7 1 4-6 to Arnaud Clement and Lukas Dlouhy.

Thisleaves Somdev Devvarman the only Indian in the mens doubles draw. Somdev, along with Japanese Kei Nishikori, has already moved to the second round.
