There was a touch of controversy when New Zealand coach Mike Henson was seen at the match officials room after third umpire VA Kulkarni adjudged the catch taken by Virat Kohli at backward fine-leg off the bat of Ross Taylor to be clean.
Henson was seen gesturing in disappointment following the confirmation of on-field umpire Ian Goulds decision by the third umpire. Taylor was batting on two when he played off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to the leg side and Kohli dived to his left to grab the ball inches off the ground.
The Indian players confidently went up and umpire Gould raised his finger. However,Taylor seemed unsure of whether Kohli had got his fingers around the ball cleanly and checked with the Indian batsman. At this point, the on-field umpires Gould and Steve Davis decided to go to the third umpire. Television replays, though not from the best angle, indicated that Kohli had his fingers under the ball. The third umpire watched replays at lenght before taking the decision.
At the end of the days play,Ashwin said the decision was fair. I asked Virat and he said he had his fingers underneath it ball. Were quite confident that he was out.
New Zealand spinner Jeetan Patel said: Honestly,I did not see the whole thing. I was taking an ice bath. I think there was a bit of disappointment with the way the decision was made. But that is just cricket.
