Kerala,Mizoram in last 16
Kerala and Mizoram emerged cluster toppers to set up a pre-quarterfinal clash in the 64th Santosh Trophy. The teams will take on each other in their last-16 knockout on July 28. Kerala thrashed Assam 5-2 with goals from Javed OK,Justin Stephen,Sakeeer MP,Bijesh Ben and Jubair KP while Akum Ao and Jilendra Brahma scored for Assam.
Mizoram,meanwhile,pipped Railways 1-0,Lalrinfela scoring the all-important goal,while Orissa blanked Bihar 3-0. Mushtaqim struck a brace and Mohammad Ehsan Sheikh scored once.
Manipur girls win Youth boxing
Manipur dominated the proceedings to clinch the sixth National Youth Womens Boxing Championships with three gold medals. Manipur totalled 28 points. Hosts Assam got the runners-up trophy with two gold medals and 25 points while Punjab finished third with a gold and 19 Points. Sarjubala Devi 48 kg of Manipur was adjudged the Best Boxer while Anita Kahar 51 kg of Assam was declared the Best Loser.
Junior pugilists win two golds
Indian junior boxers won two golds,a silver and a bronze medal at the 25th Ahmed Comert Cup in Istanbul. The tournament,with a boys section for the first time,saw the Indians beat traditional powerhouses Russia and Uzbekistan. The team finished fourth in overall standings. Nambala Govardhan 57kg and Dheeraj Kumar 52kg won gold,Surender Kumar Singh 50kg settled for silver and Gurleen Singh 63kg had to be content with a bronze.
Negi to take on Andreikin
Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi will hope to recover lost ground when he takes on Russian Dmitry Andreikin in the seventh round of the 43rd Biel Chess Festival. After a rest day,battle resumes in the category-17 event with Fabiano Caruana of Italy still in front on four points out of a possible six. As many as five players share the second spot with 3.5 points.
Jeev finishes tied 54th
A wretched back-nine marred Jeev Milkha Singhs card as he turned in an even-par 70 in the final round to end tied 54th in the Canadian Open golf tournament. The Chandigarh-pro finished with a total of three-under 277. Jeev slotted a birdie on the first hole and made pars on the next six. He,however,shot three bogeys to round off the day on a disappointing note. Swede Carl Pettersson bagged the top honours after returning a 67 to total 14-under 266.
Chowrasia tied 47th
SSP Chowrasia continued his erratic form to card a second successive two-over 74 and sign off tied 47th in the Scandinavian Masters golf tournament. Chowrasia ended his campaign with a total of four-over 292 after managing three birdies against an equal number of bogeys and a double bogey. Swede Richard S Johnson 71 lifted the trophy with a total of 11-under 277.
RadioShack to be investigated
The International Cycling Union is opening disciplinary proceedings against Lance Armstrongs RadioShack team after the start of the final stage of the Tour de France was delayed because its riders were wearing non-sanctioned jerseys.
The cyclists tried to wear black jerseys on Sunday with 28 on the back to honour the 28 million people fighting cancer,one of the themes of Armstrongs Livestrong Foundation. The UCI announced on Monday that it regrets that an initiative for a cause as worthy as the fight against cancer was not coordinated beforehand with the commissaries and organisers of the event.
