Tough draw for Indian girls
Clubbed with continental giants China and Singapore,Indian women will have a tough task when they vie for top honours in the Asia Under-16 Basketball Championship in Pune from November 30. Chinese Taipei,Philippines and Hong Kong are the other sides in Pool A. Pool B consists of Korea,Japan,Sri Lanka,Malaysia,Thailand and Kazakhstan.
A preparatory camp was held in West Bengal recently with a 26-member preliminary squad,from whom 12 players will be named.
Bagan beat Kalighat 4-0
Edeh Chidi scored a hattrick to power Mohun Bagan to a 4-0 victory over Kalighat in their Calcutta Football League Premier Division match. Bagan now have six points from two matches,while Kalighat have two points from four matches. Bagan drew first blood in the 26th minute through Ishfaq Ahmed,before Chidi took control.
Jyoti,Jeev ready for World Cup
Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa will team up for the second time at the World Cup of golf starting on Thursday at the Mission Hills Club in China. Jeev,placed 57th in the world,earned the direct berth for India by virtue of his ranking and has picked Randhawa as his partner. The duo had finished tied 17th in the last edition. This is the fourth occasion that India have earned a direct qualification for the World Cup finals.
Muniyappa in joint lead
A hole-in-one was the highlight of his card as Indian Open champion C Muniyappa turned in a four-under 49 to be in the joint lead after the opening round of the Crompton Greaves Open in Mumbai. Muniyappa shares the lead with Kolkatas Raju Ali Mollah,Jaipurs Vishal Singh and American Shaquill Shane. Three holes at the under-renovation Willingdon Sports Club course are not in play,making the par for the first two rounds 53.
Police make arrests in doping raids
Spanish police say they uncovered doping agents in the home of Spanish race walker Francisco Fernandez during raids that led to 11 people being detained. Spains Guardia Civil discovered EPO and growth hormones while raiding clinics,pharmacies and homes linked to former Kelme cycling team doctor Walter Viru,who was among the nine men and two women detained. A Guardia Civil spokesman says that medications were discovered in the home of Fernandez,who won the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
