The only time Eric Simons steamed in against India was in 1995,during the third match of the New Zealand centenary tournament in Hamilton. He went wicketless in eight overs, while compatriot Gary Kirsten was adjudged Man of the Match for a grittily constructed 80 in a winning cause.
Almost 15 years since that brief encounter,47-year old Simons has been appointed to work alongside coach Kirsten as Team Indias bowling consultant for the two Test matches in Bangladesh and the home series against South Africa.
Simons playing career was short-lived. He represented his country in 23 ODIs and did not feature in the Test squad missing out on his prime like several others due to Apartheid but managed to carve his niche in the coaching profession. He continued to play for his state,Western Province until 1998,and took over as their full-time coach after retirement.
In September 2002,Simons was appointed as South Africas head coach,a period when Kirsten played under him. After two years at the helm,Simons stint with the Proteas came to an end in October 2004 due to a string of poor performances, while Kirsten stepped down as national selector. Simons has worked as a bowling consultant on one prior occasion, under Ray Jennings during last years IPL for the Bangalore Royal Challengers.
