Recurve team qualifies second
Indian men8217;s recurve team qualified an impressive second for the elimination round after Jayanta Talukdar and Tarundeep Rai finished 15th and 16th in the individual qualification round on the second day of the World Archery Championships at Belek in Turkey today. Talukdar and Rai shot 1331 and 1330 respectively from 144 arrows while the third Indian in the fray,Kapil accumulated 1322 points to end the men8217;s recurve individual event qualification round at 22nd at the Papillion Sports Center. The Indian trio aggregated 3983 while Korea whose three archers finished at the top three spots in the individual qualification round were way ahead with 4057 points in total at the top spot in the team event.
Advani,Mehta qualify
Eight-time world champion Pankaj Advani along with Aditya Mehta,on Tuesday qualified for the main draw of the International Championship,one of the most prestigious ranking events on the Pro circuit. India8217;s leading snooker professionals,Advani ranked 70 and Mehta 72,qualified for the October 27 to November 3 tournament in Chengdu,China,after notching up comprehensive victories over their respective opponents in Sheffield,UK.
Bolt,Farah in running for award
World and Olympic champions Usain Bolt of Jamaica and Mohamed Farah of Britain have both been named among those on the 10-man shortlist for the IAAF 2013 World Athlete of the Year Award. Both men starred at the recent World Athletics Championships in Moscow where Bolt won gold in the 100 and 200 metres and Farah clinched a rare 5,000-10,000 metres double. The women8217;s shortlist has top Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce as well as Ethiopian long-distance stars Meseret Defar and Tirunesh Dibaba.
Icardi replaces injured Messi
Lionel Messi8217;s injury has opened the international door to Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi,called up for the first time by Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella for their last two World Cup qualifiers. 8220;Sabella called up forward Mauro Icardi of Italy8217;s Inter today Monday for the matches against Peru and Uruguay,8221; the Argentine Football Association AFA said on its website http://www.afa.org.ar. Argentina,who lead the South American group and have already qualified for the 2014 finals in Brazil,host Peru in Buenos Aires on October 11 and visit Uruguay in Montevideo four days later.
East Bengal lose first-leg 2-4
East Bengal went down 2-4 against Kuwait SC in the first leg semifinal of the AFC Cup football in Kuwait City. For Kuwait SC,Issam Jemaa struck twice in the 18th and 33rd minutes while Waleed Ali Jumah and Chedi Hammami scored a goal apiece in the 31st and 48th minutes respectively. Uga Okpara and Lalrindika Ralte scored for East Bengal in the 66th and 87th minute respectively. The second leg between the two sides will be played in Kolkata on October 22
Ghosal rises to 17th in rankings
India8217;s Saurav Ghosal jumped two places to a career-high of 17th position in the world rankings released by the Professional Squash Association PSA. The highest ranked Indian has made steady progress on the Tour since becoming the highest-ranked Indian of all-time some three years ago. Minister announces HRD scheme
Sports Minister Jitendra Singh announced a revised scheme called 8216;Human Resources Development in Sports8217;. The scheme intends to award fellowships and scholarships,besides providing financial grants to a number of projects in order to develop one of the top 10 sporting nations in the country. 8220;The Government intends to give focus on developing human resources in sports sciences and sports medicine for the overall development of sports and games in the country,8221; said newJitendra Singh.
India bag 3on3 team bronze
Indian 3on3 team,comprising of Ajay Pratap Singh,Lovneet Atwal,P Vijay and Amit Kanarjee,won bronze at KFC under-21 3ON3 International Challenge in Beijing. In the league matches,India lost to Chinese Taipei by two points in the opener before defeating Indonesia and USA to qualify for the quarterfinals. In the quarters,India beat China 21-17 but lost the semifinal against Australia 13-16.
