KKR vs Pune Warriors: Race between the stragglers

With 12 points,Kolkata can mathematically make it to play off but realistically their chances are slim.

Like the inaugural IPL game last week,Ranchi will once again enthusiastically queue up for the Kolkata Knight Riders vs Pune Warriors game on Wednesday. The excitement of being part of the glitzy T20 league,a novelty in these parts, has overshadowed the irrelevance of the game between the two stragglers who are far removed from the lead pack.

With 12 points from 14 games,Kolkata can mathematically make it to the play off but realistically their chances are slim. The defending champions, courtesy their wins in the last two games, will look to carry forward the momentum into Wednesdays game. As for Pune, languishing at the bottom of the table, they will try to stem the rot. After a series of losses, they will look to finish the season on a winning note.

Sundays game at the venue saw the pitch receiving sharp criticism as players found it tough to deal with the variable bounce. KKR all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who took two wickets and top-scored with 41 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, described the surface unfit for T20 cricket.

If the pitch continues to be sluggish, the Pune batsmen, will find it tough to deal with the Kolkata spinners,Sunil Narine and Sachithra Senanayake. But batting seems to be just one of the several problems that Pune side is dealing with in this forgettable season. Having changed their captains thrice in 14 matches, they are still searching for the right combination.

For Pune,medium-pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar happens to be the one bright spot in season six. The new ball bowler has repeatedly come up with probing spells that have tested rival openers. Maybe,it is Bhuvneshwars face off against the KKR batsmen that will be one of the many contests that Ranchi anticipates.
