Ahead of the 100th Test at the SCG,Sachin Tendulkar,VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble were named in a World XI selected by a panel of experts including Jim Maxwell,Mike Coward,Phil Derriman,Gideon Haigh and Malcolm Conn among others, based on their performances at the venue.

India have won only once in nine Tests at the SCG and none of the aforementioned trio figured in that innings win in January 1978 8211; but they were still the second-most represented country in the World XI,behind England, with six names in the first XI as well as twelfth man and coach. Sir Garfield Sobers West Indies and Sir Richard Hadlee New Zealand completed the team.

Ricky Ponting, meanwhile, was the only current-day player named in the Australian XI,which featured plenty of recent retirees in Adam Gilchrist,Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath,a reminder of Australias recently concluded all-conquering era.
