Error-prone India draw 2-2 with Malaysia

A win against Malaysia would have put the Indians on top of the table.

The Indian hockey team continued its unbeaten run by fighting back from a goal down to hold Malaysia 2-2 on Wednesday but is still not assured of a place in the final of the Asian Champions Trophy.

The scorers for India were Ravi Pal 9th and Danish Mujtaba 52nd. For Malaysia, the goals were struck by Tajuddin Jalil 24th and Muhammad Amin Rahim 32nd. A win against Malaysia would have put the Indians on top of the table with 10 points and an assured spot in the final but now will have to beat Pakistan in the last league match on Friday to do so. Pakistan beat Korea 3-2 in a late match and now have nine points, one more than the Indians.

India were in attack mode from the start as Gurwinder Singh Chandi made his customary run into the Malaysian circle but the first few appeals for penalty corners were turned down by the umpire. A similar attack between Chandi,Danish Mujtaba and SV Sunil also resulted in a melee but the penalty corner did not come Indias way. India, however, got the opener in the ninth minute when Sunil shot into the circle and it went off the Malaysian goalkeeper Roslan Jamaluddins pads,Ravi Pal slotting in the high rebound.

Malaysia soon started dominating the midfield and rode on a wave of attacks into the Indian half. They earned three penalty corners and finally got the equaliser off the third when Tajuddin Jalil deflected in the flick past the Indian goalkeeper Sreejesh in the 25th minute. India did come close a couple of times but was thwarted by Malaysian goalkeeper. Muhammad Amin scored off a direct flick to help Malaysia go into the break leading 2-1. India finally managed to level scores in the 53rd minute when Gurbaj Singh moved down the right flank and centered for a diving Mujtaba to send the ball in.

In another match,Japan beat China 3-2.
