The Sydney Morning Herald claims the incident occurred in Australian themed nightclub The Walkabout in Birmingham city centre. The attack,described as 8220;alcohol fuelled8221;,is reported to have taken place in the early hours of the morning after Australia lost to England in a ICC Champions Trophy match. Warner is said to have flashed a 8220;glancing blow8221; which struck Joe Root on the chin.
Warner has been left out of Australia8217;s Champions Trophy clash with New Zealand today pending an investigation,Cricket Australia said on Wednesday.
While Cricket Australia maintained it was an alleged 8220;physical altercation,8221; England officials said Warner 8220;initiated an unprovoked physical attack on a member of the England team in a Birmingham bar8221; following England8217;s victory over Australia in their opening Champions Trophy match on Saturday.
8220;Warner has admitted behaving inappropriately and has since apologized to the player involved who has accepted the apology,8221; the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement.
The ECB said it concluded that the England player 8211; named in widespread media reports as Joe Root but not picked out by either governing body -8220;was in no way responsible for nor retaliated to the attack.8221;
Warner faced a hearing on a date yet to be determined,with Cricket Australia reporting him for engaging in 8220;behavior unbecoming to a representative player or official that could a bring them or the game into disrepute or b be harmful to the interests of cricket.8221;
The temperamental Warner found himself in trouble last month when he delivered an expletive-laden Twitter rant against two senior cricket journalists.
He was fined 5,480 for breaching CA8217;s code of conduct and apologized,despite saying he disagreed with having his photo printed alongside a story written by one of the journalists.
There is a possibility that Warner,recently touted as a potential future captain,could be sent home from Australia8217;s tour of England because of his latest indiscretion,which would further weaken the team8217;s batting lineup ahead of the eagerly anticipated Ashes.
Captain Michael Clarke missed both of Australia8217;s matches in the Champions Trophy because of a lower back injury that could hinder him in the upcoming test series.
In Saturday8217;s one-day international in Birmingham,which England won by 48 runs,Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade faced up to England batsman Jonathan Trott after clashing at the crease. Words were exchanged and the umpires needed to intervene.
Trott then said something to Wade as the Australian returned to the pavilion after being dismissed in the tourists8217; reply.
The first test starts at Trent Bridge on July 10,with the teams playing four more tests in England and then meeting in a return Ashes series in Australia. In all,the old foes meet 26 times across all formats over the next nine months.
