The day after the Lahore terror attack,players and officials from around the world,stunned that the small club of international cricket that theyre a part of had been hit,spoke out against the strike on the Sri Lankan team and expressed anxiety regarding travelling to the region for future tournaments,including the high-profile Indian Premier League IPL.
The T20 league tournament,to be held from April 10 to May 24,is mired in uncertainty over security arrangements because it runs almost parallel to Indias general elections. Fears over making the trip were expressed as comments trickled in from around the cricketing world.
Heres a dossier of who said what:
Ricky Ponting,Australia captain/Kolkata Knight Riders
I think there would have been enough concerns from the guys anyway after Mumbai. That was still pretty fresh in everyones mind I think and this one on top again. Im not going to the IPL. Some of the other guys will have all those things now that theyve got to think about as well,more so than they did before.
Andrew Strauss,England captain
It is one of those things when you never feel vulnerable until something like this happens then you are always feeling vulnerable. This proves that,no matter how much security,there is always a chance that something can happen. One argument that was used is that it was very unlikely cricketers would be targeted. Clearly that has been proved wrong.
Glenn McGrath, former Australia pacer/ Delhi Daredevils
I think it will be a long time before any cricket team or sporting team ventures back to that part of the world. At the end of the day,we play cricket because we love it and we dont really want to risk our lives by doing it. With the IPL coming up there are concerns there too,being quite close to Pakistan. So thats something 8230; Ill think about over the next month.
Cameron White,Australia/Bangalore Royal Challengers
It doesnt come as an absolute shock. On one of the Australia A trips I played on in Pakistan we had quite a few bombs going off close to where we were out for dinner one night. So in the past I havent felt totally safe there,but I felt okay. It comes up in your thoughts,its a little hard to tell at this stage. Theres so much that is probably going to happen in this month in terms of the IPL,in terms of security.
Duncan Fletcher,former England coach
8220;If I were one of the England guys who signed up for the IPL,I would be concerned. India is different from Pakistan. The traffic is often so bad in the big cities where a lot of the cricket is played that the coach can move along only slowly at times,which turns it into a sitting duck for terrorists. I would be very nervous because that kind of attack is much easier to carry out in India and these guys can attack when they like.8221;
Nasser Hussain,former England captain
8220;I advocated that England should go back to India after Mumbai but maybe I was wrong. After this,the decision of the England team to return there is looking very brave indeed. This Tuesday8217;s attack is evidence that anyone can be targeted. I never want to see cricket disappear from any of its heartlands but I8217;m afraid this emphasises that the show cannot always go on.8221;
Simon Katich,Australia/ Kings XI Punjab
A few of our guys from the Mohali Kings XI team,Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene,were involved and I play with Chaminda Vaas in county cricket. Trevor Bayliss was our coach in New South Wales,so it kind of hits home when you know the blokes. Thank God they are all right.8221;
Shane Watson,Australia/ Rajasthan Royals
Youre never safe anywhere,to be fair. Its part and parcel of the world environment at the moment,more than just a certain region. I love playing cricket and if the opportunity is there to go to India,I will be there with bells on.
Tom Moody,Kings XI Punjab and former Lanka coach
We cant step away and see that were beaten because of these individual acts. Im sure security will be lifted to maximum level and players and officials should be able to be safe going forward,whether its the IPL or other tours in parts of the sub-continent.
Michael Kasprowicz,former Australia and ICL player
Youre talking about a lot of money being invested into these teams and the IPL and I cant see all these people roll over. They will spend money to get the best security available.
Brett Lee,Australia/ Kings XI Mohali
We cant let this stop us going about what we do with our lives.
Brad Hodge,Australia/ Kolkata Knight Riders
From where I stand its a tragic event and you have to soldier on. Bombs have gone off in London and we have toured there.
