After 160 years,NYT gets its first openly gay op-ed columnist

Best-selling author Frank Bruni week will write week's biggest stories from 'a different or unexpected angle.'

Best-selling author and award-winning journalist Frank Bruni has been named an op-ed columnist for The New York Times.

The Times announced the appointment on its website Monday,saying Bruni would write about the week8217;s biggest stories from 8221;a different or unexpected angle.8221;

Bruni8217;s new column will appear in the Times8217; redesigned Sunday op-ed pages.

The newspaper said Bruni will be 8221;the first openly gay op-ed columnist8221; in its 160-year history. The 46-year-old told the newspaper he was 8221;excited and really grateful.8221;

Bruni is the author of an account of George W. Bush8217;s first presidential campaign and a memoir.

He joined the Times in 1995 and was the newspaper8217;s chief restaurant critic for more than five years,beginning in 2004. He has also worked as the paper8217;s Rome bureau chief.

He was on a team that won a George Polk Award for metropolitan reporting in 1995.
